Divine is a girl from the street. She takes care of a group of abandoned children with whom she lives in an abandoned house, in a poor neighborhood. Divine and the kids have become a family; a family now in danger of being separated.
At the beginning of the story, Divine is trying to convince the social worker not to take the kids to an orphanage because she can perfectly take care of them as she has done so far. But the law does not know about affection and love, and does not make exceptions. When she is cornered, she decides to hide the kids. This is happening in her life, when she suddenly comes across a woman named Irene who, apparently, is about to be run over by a truck.
We say "apparently" because, in reality, this lady is Divine’s grandmother, who is trying to establish a bond with her, by setting up this situation. Divine saves her and they make contact for the first time.
